For families with children
The Compact protects your kids more than you think
The Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children is in force in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Most military parents have heard the name. Very few know what it actually guarantees, which means they do not ask for it.
It is not vague goodwill. It is a set of specific, enforceable protections, and if a school tells you something that contradicts what follows, you are entitled to push back and to involve your School Liaison Officer.
What the Compact actually guarantees
- Records. You can obtain a copy of your child’s records from the old school to hand-carry to the new one.
- Immunizations. You have 30 days from enrollment to provide any newly required immunizations — your child cannot be held out of school in the meantime.
- Grade placement. Your child continues at their current grade level even if the new school has different age cut-offs.
- Course placement. If your child is in a program such as advanced placement, the new school must honor it where an equivalent exists. Prior coursework is recognized so classes are not repeated.
- Special education. Students covered under IDEA have the right to comparable services under their most current IEP.
- Extracurriculars. Even if tryouts or application deadlines have passed, the school will help make participation possible.
- Attendance. Students may request excused absences before, during and after a related deployment period.
- Graduation. Course waivers for similar completed coursework, acceptance of exit exams from the previous school, and — for a senior-year move — the two districts work together so a diploma is issued and graduation happens on time.
Schools and family questions
What parents ask before moving children to the Emerald Coast.
01
Most families assigned to Eglin live in and around the Okaloosa County School District, which covers K through 12 and includes charter schools and a STEM academy. Eglin Elementary School serves grades K through 4 on the installation.
02
No. Under the Interstate Compact you have 30 days from enrollment to provide any newly required immunizations. Your child should not be held out of school in the meantime.
03
They should not. The Compact requires the receiving school to recognize prior coursework and to honor placement in programs such as advanced placement where an equivalent exists. If you are told otherwise, involve your School Liaison Officer.
04
The Compact addresses this directly. The two districts are required to work together so that a diploma is issued by the former school where needed, to allow course waivers for similar completed coursework, and to accept exit exams from the previous school — so that on-time graduation is protected.

When should I contact the School Liaison Officer?
When you receive the assignment, not when you arrive. That is their own guidance. The Eglin School Liaison Officer is at 850-882-4319.
Who to call here
Eglin AFB School Liaison Officer — 101 Chinquapin Drive, Building 2397, Eglin AFB, FL 32542. Telephone 850-882-4319 (alternate 850-883-3545), Monday to Friday 0800–1700.
Call them when you receive the assignment, not when you arrive. That is their own advice, and it is the difference between arriving with a plan and arriving with a problem.
Eglin EFMP enrollment — 307 Boatner Road, Building 2825, Room 1B066, Eglin AFB, FL 32542. Telephone 850-883-9452, Monday to Thursday 0800–1500. Note they are closed on Fridays.
Military & Family Readiness Center, Relocation Services — 502 W. Van Matre Avenue, Building 205, Eglin AFB, FL 32542. Telephone 850-882-9060 or 850-882-9061, Monday to Friday 0730–1530. They run the Team Eglin Newcomers Orientation and pre-arrival consultations.

The school district
Most families assigned to Eglin live in and around the Okaloosa County School District, which covers K–12 and includes charter schools and a STEM academy. Eglin Elementary School serves grades K–4 on the installation (850-833-4320).
School zones are the single biggest driver of where military families with children end up living here — more than commute, more than price per square foot. Niceville and Bluewater Bay carry a price premium that is very largely a schools premium. If schools are your priority, tell me that first and I will build the search around zones rather than around a map radius.
EFMP and moving with special needs
The Exceptional Family Member Program's family support function provides information, resources and support to help families with special needs navigate their systems of care. Practical advice from Eglin's own guidance: plan ahead, and specifically request a warm hand-off from the family support office you are leaving to the one you are joining. Do not assume it happens automatically.
Military OneSource (800-342-9647) can refer you to a special needs consultant. Named tools worth knowing are EFMP & Me, the Education Directory for Children with Special Needs, and Special Care Organizational Records. Enrollment specifics and assignment coordination vary — confirm details with the Eglin EFMP office directly rather than with any website, mine included.
Moving with pets
There is a pet transportation allowance covering one household pet — defined in the regulations as a cat or a dog — per PCS order, up to $550 within the continental US. Hotel pet fees are reimbursable with itemized receipts. Separately, and relevant to house-hunting: installation housing has stricter pet rules than most civilian rentals, and some private communities here have breed restrictions. Tell me about your dog early; it narrows the search more than people expect.
